Notes about Joannes van Lunsen

Joannes (Jan) van Lunsen trad op 15 juli 1778 als "hooploper"(hulpje van de matrozen in dienst van de Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie (VOC). Nog dezelfde dag vertrok hij vanaf de rede van Texel met de driedekker "Pallas", onder bevel van Schipper Isaac Segon, naar Indië. Op 29 november 1778 kwam het schip aan bij Kaap de Goede Hoop. Op 2 januari 1779 vertrok het schip van hier voor het tweede deel van de reis en arriveerde uiteindelijk, bijna acht maanden na vertrek, op 4 april 1779 in Batavia. Volgens het scheepslogboek overleed Joannes van Lunsen op 1 januari 1781 ergens in Azië (vermoedelijk ergens in Aziatische wateren aan boord van dit schip) (Bron: NA, VOC-Opvarenden, Inv.nr.6335, Fol. 185, Das-en reisnr. 4318.6).


 


De "Pallas" was de eerste zogenaamde driedekker die de Kamer van Zeeland voor de VOC liet bouwen. Dit op voorstel van scheepstimmerman W. Udemans die meende dat driedekkers beter bestand waren tegen zware stormen en door de aanwezigheid van meer leefruimte gezonder waren voor de bemanning. Bij een werf in Middelburg werden in totaal 12 van deze schepen gebouwd. De Pallas werd in 1762 op stapel gezet en in 1764 voltooid. In dat jaar kwam het in gebruik bij de VOC. De Pallas was 150 voet lang, had een laadvermogen van 575 last (1150 ton) en een bemanning die varieerde van 260 tot 394 koppen. De reis welke Joannes van Lunsen met dit schip maakte was haar laatste. Nadien is het niet meer in Nederland terug geweest. In 1781 werd het in Trincomale (Ceylon) gesloopt nadat het 13 grote reizen (onder andere naar Canton in China) had gemaakt (Bron: Huygens Ing, The Dutch East India Company's shipping between the Netherlands and Asia 1595-1795).
