Het stadsbeeld van Dordrecht was in vroeger jaren (al) moeilijk denkbaar zonder de EDAD (Eerste Dordtse Autobus Dienst), die een schakel vormde tussen Dordrecht en de buitengemeenten. EDAD kende in vroeger jaren verschillende eigenaars, zoals Dirkzwager, Schram en Van Twist. Sinds 1941 is de familie Lipman eigenaar van het bedrijf.

Uit de vloed van data en feiten die zijn genoemd in de historie van EDAD, lichten we 1 april 1923 er uit als aanvangsdatum van het bedrijf. Reeds enkele weken daarvoor ging het blijde bericht door ¹s-Gravendeel enWieldrecht dat er een bus zou gaan rijden van het ¹s-Gravendeelse veernaar Dordrecht en zowaar, op 2e Paasdag, ¹s-middags om 1 uur kwam er een T-Ford omnibus aan rijden... Er was zoveel belangstelling voor dat de politie er aan te pas moest komen.

In de loop van de jaren werd de bus populair, de diensten breidden zichuit en het wagenpark groeide. Het publiek wilde uitstapjes gaan maken en zo ontstond het toerwagenbedrijf van EDAD. Een reisje naar Den Haag of Brussel was destijds een heel waagstuk. De malaise-jaren brachten moeilijke tijden, maar het toerwagenbedrijf ontwikkelde zich verder. Vlakvoor de oorlog kwamen er enkele nieuwe bussen bij: Kromhouts van fl. 16.000,00 per stuk. Een vermogen in die tijd. Maar in de oorlog werden bijna alle bussen gevorderd. Ze verdwenen naar Frankrijk en werden nimmer teruggezien.

Aan het eind van de oorlog waren er geen bussen meer over en kwamen de activiteiten stil te liggen. Na de oorlog werd er met man en macht gewerkt om weer enkele wagens aan het rijden te krijgen. In 1948, bij het 25-jarig bestaan, floreerde EDAD bijna beter dan ooit. Inmiddels was de passagiersboot "Thor" aangeschaft, waarmee een veerdienst werd onderhouden tussen ¹s-Gravendeel, Wieldrecht en Zwijndrecht. Bij de watersnoodramp van 1953 heeft EDAD een grote rol gespeeld bij de evacuatie van de mensen uit de verdronken Hoeksche Waard.

Na 33 jaar de lijndiensten te hebben verzorgd in Dordrecht en omgeving,werd op 1 januari 1957 de concessie noodgedwongen overgedragen aan hetdestijds opgerichte Gemeentelijk Vervoerbedrijf. EDAD ging verder als louter touringcarbedrijf. Er werd een contract afgesloten voor vier bussen personeelsvervoer met "Johan de Wit". In het centrum van Dordrecht werd een eigen reisbureau geopend, er kwam een buitenlandprogramma met meerdaagse reizen en met groot succes werden ook de eerste dagtochten werden georganiseerd. De heer A.A.A. Lipman ­ voor bekenden Arie of Aai ­ zwaaide vanaf de veertiger jaren de scepter over het bedrijf.
