Notes about Jacob HOEUFFT
HOEUFFT (Mr. Jacob), geb. te Rotterdam 8 Januari 1660, ged. te Dordrecht 5 Nov. d.a.v., overl. aldaar 26 Juli 1717, zoon van Diederik (dl. III, kol. 594) en van Maria de Witt.
Hij studeerde sedert 19 April 1679 te Leiden in de rechten, werd in 1691 raad der stad Dordrecht en in 1700 burgemeester aldaar. Hij was afgevaardigde ter Staten van Holland en lid van gecommitteerde raden, bewindhebber van de W. Ind. Comp. ter Kamer van de Maas, baljuw en dijkgraaf van Wieldrecht, landdrost van Zuid-Holland en domheer te Utrecht.
Toen hij te Leiden studeerde, was hij ergens in Zuid-Holland op de jacht en werd toen door jachtopzieners bekeurd, waarschijnlijk omdat hij te veel honden bij zich had. Hierover ontstond twist, waarbij hij in drift een der jachtopzieners met zijn polsstok doodsloeg. Naar aanleiding daarvan ontstond er verschil tusschen het forum previligiatum van Leiden en den baljuw van Zuid-Holland over de vraag door wien die zaak moest berecht worden; die twist liep zóó hoog, dat prins Willem III er zich mede bemoeide en aan Jacob geheele vrijheid van straf toekende. Om die reden was Jacob Hoeufft zijn geheele leven altijd zeer prinsgezind, waarom hij in 1702 uit de regeering van Dordrecht werd gezet.
Hij huwde te Dordrecht 20 Juni 1694 met Sophia Everwijn (1668-1747), dochter van Mr. Samuel, burgemeester van Dordrecht, en van Cornelia de Rovere. Uit dit huwelijk sproten 14 kinderen, waarvan Pompejus, Samuel, Pieter en Jan (3) volgen. Een dochter Sophia, was gehuwd met Johan Wenceslaus van Otting, pred. te Breda.
Zijn portret geschilderd door G. Schalcken bij jhr. Mr. Hoeufft van Velsen te 's Gravenhage.
