Johannes en Rutgerus waren tweeling

Het particulier landgoed Den Heuvel, eigendom van de familie Jonkheer Mr. C.C. de Pesters, was het grootste en mooiste in deze omgeving. Het betrof een grondstuk dat gelegen was: Oostelijk van de Wylerbaan, naar het dorp Groesbeek, begrensd door het Molendal en het Heikantseveld, van de Wylergrens richting Brandenburg. Hiertoe behoorden onder meer: Brandenburg, Vosheuvels veld, Heuvelse Veld, Hazenbroek, Anna's Bos en Steenbroekse Heide die nu bekend staat als de Boersteeg. "Op het landgoed lagen tien pachtboerderijen: Groenendaal, Veldzicht, Heuvelhof, Vosheuvel, Grote Grenshof, Kleine Grenshof, Middelhof, Heidedaal, Metjesdael en Boomrijk. De familie zelf woonde in 'Villa de Heuvel', die in chaletstijl gebouwd was. Aan dit landgoed is een hoofdstuk gewijd in de uitgave Oud Groesbeek in woord en beeld en het blijft daarom hier verder onbesproken. Volstaan wordt met de mededeling dat het landgoed in 1926, na het overlijden van freule Jacoba de Pesters, in kavels is verkocht en dat het fraaie landhuis in 1944-1945 door granaatvuur verwoest is. Op deze foto zien we Jan Verbeet die zich erop kon beroepen de boswachter te zijn van dit grootste landgoed. Hij was geboren aan de, buurtschap De Kamp, waar vroeger het Lagewald begon. Hier stonden enkele kleine boerderijen, waarvan de bewoners ook elders, waaronder op het landgoed De Heuvel, werkten als land of bosarbeiders. Jan was een zoon van Gerhard Verbeet, geboren te Groesbeek in 1858, en Petronella Tissen, geboren te Ottersum in 1862. Het echtpaar kreeg negen kinderen: de tweeling Rutgerus en Johannes in 1888, Marinus in 1890, Johanna in 1891, Wilhelmus in 1893, Maria in 1895, Gerardus in 1897, Petronella in 1900 en Barthelomeus in 1903. Hiervan zouden Rut, Jan en Bart als boswachter bekend worden. Geüniformeerd was verder hun oom Rutgerus (Rutje) Verbeet, geboren te Groesbeek in 1871, die te Heumen als onbezoldigd rijksveldwachter en gemeente veldwachter de kost verdiende. Aan de boswachterloopbaan van Jan komt een einde als het landgoed Den Heuvel na het overlijden van Jacoba de Pesters in kavels te koop wordt aangeboden. Wel bleef hij tot het einde toe in dienst, want voor de bezichtiging diende men zich te melden bij den boswachter J. Verbeet, Wylerschebaan B11, die als dan aanwijzingen doet. Te veilen en te verkopen stonden: Heerenhuis met erf, Schuren, koetshuis met koetsierswoning en tuinmanshuis, electriciteitsgebouw, 5 boerderijen, moestuin, bouw en weilanden, dennebosschen, hakhout en wegen, samen groot plm 254.40.05 H.A. in 30 perceelen. De veiling vond plaats te Nijmegen op 11 november 1926.
