    Er stond op Facebook een foto van Jan "Bakje" Smeding. Hierbij in het kort zijn levensverhaal.
    Ver in de omtrek van Drachten kende iedereen Jan Bakje, bijnaam van Jan Smeding. Jan was met een lichte, geestelijke handicap geboren. Toen hij 17 jaar was kreeg hij kinderverlamming. Hieraan hield hij een zodanige handicap over dat hij het volledig gebruik van zijn linkerbeen miste. Op zijn transportfiets met daarop een koffer gevuld met galanterieën bezocht hij vooral afgelegen huizen en boerderijen om zijn waar te slijten. Onderweg hield Jan alles in de gaten, vooral vrouwen hadden zijn speciale aandacht. Veel schoolmeisjes uit die tijd zullen zich herinneren dat hij in zijn onschuld bij het passeren steevast zei: “Dag fammen”. Hierbij keek hij zo lang achterom de meisjes na dat hij bijna met zijn fiets viel.

    Jan was geboren op 16 januari 1920 in Harkema Opeinde als zoon van Petrus Smeding en Froukje Tabak. Jan had zeven broers en zusters. In volgorde van geboorte waren dat Johannis, Hiltje, Jan, Jantje, Anne, Gepke, Bareld en Tietje. Doordat zijn vader boerenarbeider was, verhuisde hij vaak in de maand mei als zijn vader bij een andere boer ging werken. Na Harkema, Ureterp, Nijega, Opeinde kwam de familie uiteindelijk in Smalle Ee terecht. Na de dood van zijn vader bleef Jan in het huis aan het meer bij zijn moeder wonen.
    Jan begon rond 1937 met de verkoop van vis. Dit was niet zo’n succes omdat Jan zelf de grootste klant was. Hij schakelde dan ook snel over op de verkoop van kammen, elastiek, naai- en stopgaren, spelden en wat dies meer zij. Met deze waren in een koffer brachten zijn fietstochten hem zelfs tot in de provincie Groningen, hij had vaste klanten tot in Grootegast. Als hij laat in de middag thuis kwam, was hij vaak doodop. Meestal ging hij zeer vroeg naar bed om de volgende dag weer fris te zijn voor een nieuwe, verre tocht. Het moet voor hem met zijn handicap een zwaar beroep zijn geweest. Daarbij werd hij ook nog zeer ten onrechte door de jeugd nageroepen. Hij was meestal gekleed in een pak, een trui en een paar klompen.
    Er ging destijds een verhaal dat hij een spiegeltje in zijn koffer had om dames onder de rok te kijken. Ik heb dat zelf nooit gezien als hij bij ons kwam. Ook uit een ander oogpunt is dit verhaal ongeloofwaardig: de vrouwen konden toch zelf ook het spiegeltje zien als dat in de koffer zat.
    Velen kochten bij hem uit medelijden, anderen kochten om van hem af te zijn.
    Dit beroep heeft hij tot omstreeks 1962 uitgeoefend. Daarna werkte hij op de mindervalidenwerkplaats De Brug. In 1973 overleed zijn moeder. Hij woonde eerst een half jaar bij een zuster in, daarna verbleef hij in Het Eiland in Drachten.

    Jan Smeding is op 23 september 1992 op 72-jarige leeftijd overleden.
