De oudste zoon Jan zat net een paar maanden op het seminarie toen zijn moeder overleed. Hij kan vanwege de afstand niet bij de begrafenis zijn. De zorg voor de jonge kinderen werd overgenomen door Janke de Jong, de zuster van vader Jan.
