  * Volgens de Siciliaanse erudiet Rocco Pirri was hij een zoon van hertog Richard II van Normandië of van diens halfbroer Willem van Brionne (-1058), graaf van Hiémois.[4]
  * De Deense theoloog Erik Pontoppidan maakte van Tancrede van Hauteville een zoon van hertog Richard III van Normandië.[5]
  * Volgens de Duitse historicus Johann Christoph Gatterer was Tancred een afstammeling van een nauwe verwant van Rollo.[6]
  * De Franse historicus Jean-Baptiste Mailly (1744-1794) zegt over hem dat enkele hem doen afstammen van Rollo.[7]

"The Hauteville family was said by later traditions to descend from Hiallt, a Norseman active in 920, who is credited with founding the village of Hialtus Villa (Hauteville) in the Cotentin of Normandy.[1][2] Tancred is a supposed descendant of Hiallt, from whom the village of Hauteville and the family drew their name."

Een viking Hiallt, fl 920, stichtte het dorp. Niet ontdenkbaar dat hij mee kwam met Rollo. Een viking Tancred die meekwam met Rollo stichtte het dorp Tancarville.
Het is niet ondenkbaar dat een zoon van Tancred, misschien Rabel I, een zoon naar zijn vader vernoemde, en dat diens dochter, Obodone, huwde met Gerald van Hautevill, misschien een kleinzoon van die Hialt, en dat deze Tancred vernoemd is naar de kleinzoon van de stichter van Tancredville.
