Notes about Gillis Jacobszoon Herweijer

Gillis Herweijer was in 1599 heemraad en reeds in 1604 dijkgraaf van de polder Nieuw-Beijerland. We vermoeden dat hij door de relaties van zijn vader naar deze streek kwam. Hij huurde de boerderij "Zuidwijck". Hij staat herhaaldelijk vermeld in het polderarchief in verband met het schoonmaken van wateringen in de periode 1600-1616. In 1617 werd hij nog genoemd bij landaankoop. Later in 1617 werd zijn vrouw als weduwe genoemd. Op de nog bestaande zerk in de kerk te Nieuw-Beijerland staat: "Hier leyt begraven Gillis Herweyer Jacobsz., dyckgraef. Hij stierf de ... Juny anno 16..". (datum onleesbaar, maar het moet dus 1617 zijn)

Gillis was twee keer gehuwd en had kinderen bij beide vrouwen. De geboortedata zijn niet precies bekend, zodat niet voor alle kinderen kan worden vastgesteld van welke moeder ze waren. De volgorde is dus niet bewezen.
