Notes about Hendrik Johannes van der Bijl

1. Hij heeft zijn opleiding op het oude Victoria-College in Stellenbosch (1906-1908) en in Leibzig in Duitsland (1909-'13) ontvangen. Hij wordt in 1913 onderzoek-natuurkundige bij de Amerikaanse Telefoon en Telegraaf Maatschappij en de Westelijke Electriciteitsmaatschappij en de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Zijn boek "The Termionic Vacuum Tube", uitgegeven in 1920 met 20 herdrukken, is het standaardwerk voor de radio buis geworden en heeft hem internationale faam gebracht. Op verzoek van de Eerste Minister destijds, Gen. Smuts, is hij in 1920 teruggekomen naar Zuid-Afrika als wetenschappelijk en technisch adviseur van de regering. Hij was de stichter en voorzitter van Evkom (1922), Yskor (1928), Amkor (1937), de Nijverheidsontwikkelingscorporatie (1945), Vikor (1946) en Safmarine (1947). In 1939 is hij als Directeur-Generaal van de oorlogsvoorraden aangesteld. Het Vanderbijlpark is naar hem vernoemd.
