Child(ren):
Godfried apparently became Count of Werl-Arnsberg (in Westphalia,Germany) through his wife. In 1133 Godfried and his brother Hermanapparently murdered Floris "The Black", the brother of Count Dirk VI ofHolland, who had first tried in vain to depose Count Dirk, and then -just before his own violent death - had succeeded in taking politicalpower in Utrecht away from Bishop of Andries van Kuik. After this murderthe lands around Cuijk were plundered, the castle was completelydestroyed on orders from Count Dirk and the Emperor, and Godfried andHerman themselves were banished. This seems strange, since Floris "TheBlack" had been a very dangerous rival to his brother Dirk VI, the GermanEmperor Lotharius III was the Count's brother-in-law, Bishop Andries ofUtrecht was a true vassal of the German Emperor, and Godfried's daughterAlveradis later married Count Dirk's son Otto IV, Count of Bentheim.Another source, "Nijhoffs Geschiedenis-lexicon" by H.W.J. Volmuller,gives another explanation: Floris "The Black" had started an affair withHeilwiva, Count Godfried's rich niece. Her Van Cuijk uncles were verymuch opposed to this liaison, and in the ensuing feud, Floris was killed.
