Notes about Aloysius Adrianus "Louis" Spaas

Koopman (1886-1908), kaarsenfabrikant, koopman in lakenstoffen (1910).

Zij wonen in de Posthoorn. Vader Arts is eigenaar van de brouwerij De Hoop in Budel. Louis is eerst koopman in Harmelen terwijl in die tijd Maria een stoffenwinkel uitbaat.

De kaarsenfabriek wordt teruggebracht naar De Posthoorn. De winkelruimte is kaarsenkamer waar de kaarsen gerold worden. Karel beheert de produktie terwijl Luis de verkoop voor zijn rekening neemt.

1887 het bedrijfje verhuist naar Sint-Huibrechts-Lille. Een deel van het bedrijf wordt ingericht als sigarenfabriek.

1901 Na het verdwijnen van de sigarenfabriek, verhuist de wasblekerij terug naar Hamont. De kaarsenmakerij wordt gemoderniseerd door Gerard, Henri & Jozef Spaas en de productie breidt uit. In 1901 neemt Louis samen met zijn broer Karel de kaarsenfabriek over van broer Theodoor. Verder wordt stoffenhandel begin 20e eeuw uitgebreid onder de naam "Confectie Magazijn De Posthoorn".

1916 trekt Karel zich terug vanwege gezondheidsproblemen. Na de 1e wereldoorlog zetten Luis met zijn zonen Gerard en Henri de zaak verder voort.

1949 l. Spaas en co, Het familiebedrijf wordt omgevormd tot de NV Kaarsenfabriek L.Spaas en Co. Pas in 1980 wordt dit de NV Spaas Kaarsen.

1953 Het bedrijf viert zijn 100-jarig bestaan en telt ongeveer 60 werknemers. Helaas breekt een jaar later een brand uit die de volledige fabriek in de as legt. Nederland wordt intussen door zware overstromingen getroffen.

1979 Het bedrijf verhuist naar zijn huidige locatie. Op dat moment is de vraag naar huishoudkaarsen en fantastiekaarsen fors toegenomen. Ook de afzetmarkten in Nederland, Frankrijk en Duitsland groeien sterk.

1981 was de kaarsenfabriek als NV Spaas Cotton uitgegroeid tot de grootste van de Benelux met 3000 ton productie en 150 man personeel onder leiding van Ing. Gerard Spaas.
