Sobibor

 

Tussen 2 maart 1943 en 20 juli 1943 reden er negentien treinen met 34.313 Nederlandse joden van Westerbork naar het Poolse vernietigingskamp Sobibor. In Sobibor zijn in totaal ruim 250.000 joden vermoord, slechts 47 overleefden het kamp waaronder twee Nederlandse vrouwen: Selma Engel-Wijnberg en Ursula Stern. Zij braken tijdens de gevangenenopstand van 14 oktober 1943, samen met driehonderd medegevangenen, uit het kamp en vluchtten door het mijnenveld naar het bos eromheen. Verreweg de meeste ontsnapte gevangenen werden snel opgespoord en vermoord. Zestien andere Nederlandse overlevenden zijn heel kortstondig in Sobibor geweest. Zij zijn na aankomst onmiddellijk weggevoerd naar een in de buurt gelegen werkkamp. Alle andere Nederlandse joden zijn na aankomst in Sobibor vermoord. Na de opstand werd het vernietigingskamp ontmanteld, de resterende gevangenen gedood en alle sporen van de massamoord uitgewist.

Tegenwoordig markeert een monument de plek waar de gaskamers van Sobibor stonden en rest een heuvel van as als stille getuige.

 

De 19 treinen naar Sobibor vertrokken alle in 1943 vanuit Westerbork, steeds op dinsdagmorgen.
