Notes about Samuel van Gelderen

Mauthausen

In 1941 en 1942 werden ruim 1.300 joden uit Nederland naar het Oostenrijkse Mauthausen gedeporteerd. In 1941 waren dat de slachtoffers van de razzia's die in Amsterdam in februari en junien in Twente en de Achterhoek in september en oktober plaatsvonden. In 1942 vonden er transporten van ongeveer vijfhonderd joodse mannen via het kamp in Amersfoort naar Mauthausen plaats. Mauthausen was weliswaar officieel een concentratiekamp maar functioneerde als vernietigingskamp. Vele gevangenen vonden er de dood door afmattende slavenarbeid en mishandelingen van de bewakers. De meesten stierven in de beruchte steengroeve van het kamp. Ook destijds noemde men Mauthausen ‘Moordhausen’. Toen Nederlandse joden zich vanaf juli 1942 moesten melden voor tewerkstelling in het Oosten, dreigde debezetter met transport naar Mauthausen wanneer joden aan de oproep geen gehoor zouden geven. Dat werkte door de slechte reputatie van het kamp in het voordeel van de bezetter. Na 1942 zijn er vanuit Nederland geen deportaties meer geweest naar dit kamp. Nederlandse niet-joodse gevangenen kwamen in 1944 via andere kampen weer in Mauthausen aan. Alle Nederlandse gevangenen, joden en niet-joden, diein Mauthausen gevangen zaten vonden er de dood.

Vanaf 1949 is het voormalig kamp een herinneringscentrum. Een Nederlands monument memoreert alle uit Nederland afkomstige slachtoffers.
