Geldhandel
In de 18de eeuw werd er in Amsterdam vooral gehandeld in geld, in leningen. Het handelshuis Deutz verstrekte sinds de 17de eeuw leningen aan de keizerlijke familie van Oostenrijk.

Keizerlijke lening
In 1733 begon keizer Karel VI van Oostenrijk (1685-1740) geld te lenen bij de Amsterdamse bankier Willem Gideon Deutz. Als onderpand voor deze lening stelde de keizer de inkomsten van de domeinen in Silezië, in het huidige Polen.

Miljoenen
Willem Gideon Deutz leende de keizer 2,5 miljoen tegen een rente van 6%. In 1736 volgde na het dalen van de rente een conversie: 3,5 miljoen tegen 5% aflossing na 10 jaar met jaarlijks 20% rente. De lening werd verdeeld over 5 obligaties van 700.000,-, die door Vorsten en Standen van Silezië in 5 afzonderlijke oorkonden bevestigd werden.

Failliet
Na de dood van keizer Karel VI brak de Oostenrijkse successieoorlog uit, waarna Silezië aan de Pruisen werd toegewezen. Dat betekende het einde van de afbetaling op de lening. Deutz ging failliet.

Archief
De 5 obligaties en bijbehorende oorkonden kwamen na het faillissement van Deutz in het bezit van de Amsterdamse Wisselbank. In het archief bevinden zich nu nog slechts één obligatie en één bevestigingsoorkonde; de 4 anderen zijn vermist. Het Stadsarchief Amsterdam wil ze graag terughebben.
