Notes about William Keith, 1st Earl Marischal

In 1430 Sir William Keith was created Lord Keith, and in 1458 Sir William Keith was raised to the peerage as first Earl Marischal [Scotland] by James II. These titles remained in the family until 1715. The role of the Marischal was to serve as custodian of the Royal Regalia of Scotland, and to protect the king’s person when attending parliament.
