Notes about John Sawford

(Research):Some time after the extermination of the dogs, tigers became a serious menace to sheep owners in many parts, notably in the East, and around Tooms Lake. No doubt the wild dogs had been instrumental in keeping the tigers in check. So serious was the loss inflicted by the tigers that much Government land was abandoned. In our own case, my father once ran a big lot of sheep on Crown land for which little rent was paid. He paid at least three shepherds to look after sheep on these Crown leases - John Sawford at Swanston, Christopher Rooney and Jim Harding at Jane Banks and Blue Tier. Eventually a lot of this cheap country was rendered useless and abandoned. I remember about 1882 my father sent me to Swanston to help Jack Sawford in his attempt to catch or drive away the tigers which were "killing" badly at the time. I had a pack of good dogs, which, with others belonging to Sawford, we took out every day over the run.
