De Familie Smits bewoonde een boerderij aan de Heistraat in Vrijhoeve Capel,
gedekt met een rieten kap.Deze boerderij brandde in 1923 volledig af door
onvoorzichtigheid met een kaars.Jozua kon ternauwernood zijn halfbroer Jan
redden;Anton verbrandde zijn voeten en kwam hiermee voor ettelijke maanden in
het ziekenhuis.
