Na een oproep van de paus om deel te nemen in het pauselijke leger, meldde Christiaan zich als één van de 5000 vrijwilligers.
Hij kreeg de medaille van verdienste wegens het deelnemen aan de slag van Mentana in 1867, waar Garibaldi, die de Kerkelijke Staat wou veroveren om Italie tot een groot koninkrijk te verenigen, verslagen werd.
Drie jaar later kwam er een einde aan de Pauselijke Staat.
Hij werd "de keizer oet de meule" genoemd, omdat hij keizer was van de schutterij.
Hij verbleef veel op de Breukberg die tenslotte naar hem de "Keizersberg" is vernoemd.
