Wikipedia: Een grietenij is een voorloper van de huidige Nederlandse gemeente met name in de provincie Friesland, hoewel de term ook voorkwam in de Groninger Ommelanden. Van het eind van de 16e eeuw tot 1851 waren er in Friesland in totaal 30 grietenijen. Het woord 'grietenij' betekent 'bestuursgebied van een grietman', en het woord 'grietman' houdt verband met 'groeten'.
De grietenijen maakten deel uit van de kwartieren (regio's) Oostergo, Westergo en Zevenwouden.
Bij de gemeentewet van 1851 werd de benaming 'grietenij' vervangen door 'gemeente' en 'grietman' door 'burgemeester', zodat in heel Nederland dezelfde naamgeving werd gebruikt.
