    Otto I de Grote (Wallhausen (Saksen-Anhalt), 23 november 912 - Memleben, 7 mei 973), zoon van Hendrik de Vogelaar en Mathilde van Ringelheim, was hertog van Saksen, koning van Duitsland, koning van Italië, en "de eerste van de Duitse vorsten die keizer van Italië werd genoemd" volgens Arnulf van Milaan.[1] Nadat Karel de Grote in 800 tot keizer werd gekroond, werd zijn rijk in de 9e eeuw onder zijn kleinzonen verdeeld en was de keizerlijke titel, na de moord op Berengarius I van Friuli in 924, bijna veertig jaar vacant, voordat Otto de Grote op 2 februari 962 tot keizer werd gekroond van wat later het Heilige Roomse Rijk zou worden genoemd. Hij stamde uit het geslacht van de Liudolfingen, meestal Ottonen genoemd.
