BICKER, Wendela (ged. Amsterdam 30-12-1635 – gest. Den Haag 1-7-1668), vrouw van raadpensionaris Johan de Witt. Dochter van Johan Bicker (1591-1653), koopman, schepen en sinds 1653 burgemeester van Amsterdam, en Agneta de Graeff (1603-1656). Op 16-2-1655 trouwde Wendela Bicker in Amsterdam met Johan de Witt (1625-1672), sinds 1653 raadpensionaris van Holland en West-Friesland. Uit dit huwelijk werden 6 dochters en 2 zoons geboren, van wie 3 dochters jong overleden.

Wendela Bicker(s) – zelf noemde zij zich Bickers – groeide op als dochter in een rijk en aanzienlijk regentengezin aan de Amsterdamse Keizersgracht. Zij had drie zusters boven en twee onder zich. Drie zusjes en een broer waren jong gestorven. Toen Johan de Witt Wendela in de nazomer van 1654 het hof begon te maken, was zij pas achttien jaar oud. De Witt was toen al raadpensionaris van Holland, en woonde als vrijgezel in Den Haag. Voor zijn huishouden beschikte hij over slechts één dienstbode en de incidentele hulp van zijn zus Johanna, die als getrouwde vrouw ook haar eigen huishouden in Dordrecht te bestieren had. Dit was voor ‘de eerste man van de Republiek’ een onwenselijke situatie, en zijn omgeving – in het bijzonder zijn vader – drong er daarom bij hem op aan een bruid te gaan zoeken. Al snel viel zijn oog op Wendela, die bekend stond als een vrolijk en charmant meisje. Haar uiterlijk wordt altijd in gematigde termen beschreven: een slanke vrouw met blonde lokken, een bleek gelaat en zachte ogen.
