Negentiende-eeuws politicus, gezant en Tweede-Kamervoorzitter na de winst van de rechtse coalitie in 1888. Telg uit een geslacht van Dordtse regenten; orthodox protestant. Was ambtenaar op Justitie en enkele malen Tweede-Kamerlid voor de antirevolutionairen. Trad tamelijk zelfstandig op, waarbij hij tot de conservatieve vleugel kon worden gerekend. Dertien jaar gezant in Zuid-Afrika; een functie die hij combineerde met het Kamervoorzitterschap. Voelde zich sterk verbonden met de calvinistische nakomelingen van Nederlanders in Zuid-Afrika. Tamelijk ijdel en deftig. Liet zich als gezant graag met enige luister aandienen bij andere gezanten. Als bekwaam jurist maakte hij deel uit van diverse staatscommissies.
