Notes about Johan de WITT

WITT (Johan de) (8), heer van Jaarsveld, geb. te Dordrecht 5 Dec. 1720, gest. te Dordrecht 2 Nov. 1783, zoon van Cornelis (4) de Witt (kol. 1453) en Catharina Wilhelmina van den Honert. Hij studeerde te Leiden, waar hij 16 April 1737 werd ingeschreven (Album i.d.) Hij werd in 1740 secretaris van de hooge vierschaar van (het toenmalige) Zuid-Holland. Hij hield een rede bij het bezoek van prins Willem IV aan Dordrecht op diens reis naar Zeeland in 1747 (gedrukt in Mercure Hist. et Pol., CXII, 718). In 1746 werd hij schepen van Dordrecht en dus lid van den oud-raad, in 1747 directeur van den Levantschen handel in het college op de Maze. Hij huwde 22 Mei 1742 Abigaël Constantia Roos, bij wie hij had drie kinderen, van wie twee zoons: de oudste, Cornelis (geb. 20 Aug. 1745, begraven 8 Juni 1813), ook heer van Jaarsveld, huwde 4 April 1784 Emerentia van Renten, wed. Bach, welk huwelijk kinderloos bleef; de jongste, Pieter Constantijn (geb. 20 Nov. 1750), stierf reeds in Jan. 1756.
