Pieter Maartensz van Swangh uit Dort is 15 december 1719 als soldaat in dienst getreden van de VOC. Hij vertrok die dag op het schip Groenswaart voor de kamer Rotterdam naar Batavia. 25 maart 1720 kwamen zij bij de Kaap aan en op 10 juli 1720 in Batavia.
