Volgens overlevering in de familie werd verteld dat een zoon uit dit gezin gesneuveld zou zijn tijdens de tocht van Napoleon naar Rusland. De naam Wijnand werd genoemd, maar vermoedelijk betreft het hier Gerrit Stuurstraat, want Gerrit werd in 1813 opgeroepen voor militaire dienst, hij was toen 22 jaar. Dit verhaal had Nicolaas Stuurstraat (1944) als kind gehoord van zijn opa (Nicolaas Stuurstraat, 1872-1961) en van zijn oudoom Wijnand Stuurstraat (1875-1968)
