Abraham Van Houten, an Octogenarian, Dies and His Wife May Follow
Abraham Van Houten, who has been sexton of the Netherland Reformed Chruch, Park and Exchange Places, for fifteen years, died on Sunday from pheumonia and old age, in his eighty-first year.
His wife, who is five days his senior, is ill as a result of his death and may not survive the shock. They were married 53 years ago in Holland and came to Passaic about eight years later.
They made the trip over the Atlantic in a sailing vessel, which took 75 days for the trip. It was a thrilling voyage. The treacherous seas many times almost swamped the vessel and the pumps were kept busy night and day the greater part of the time to keep her from sinking. Forty-four persons died aboard ship during her terrible passage. Several children were born on board but all died except one, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Van Houten, who is now Mrs. George Campbell, of Newark.
The Van Houtens went directly to Lodi and lived there for seven years. They also lived at Spring Valley and Paramus before coming to Passaic thirty years ago.
Mr. Van Houten had been ailing for several months and was recentlyt taken with pneumonia for the fourth time during his long life. His age told heavily against him this time and he sank rapidly.
Besides his widow he leaves three children, John Van Houten, of Newark; Nicholas Van Houten, of Passaic, and Mrs. George Campbell, of Newark.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon from the Netherland Reformed Church.
