Notes about Leendert de GEUS

Leendert de Geus, geb. 's-Gravendeel (NL) 1890, had ca 1910 juist zijn dienstplicht vervuld en voor eigen rekening 5 ha land gehuurd in de Krabbepolder, een eilandje van ongeveer 50 ha, gelegen in de rivier de "Dortsche Kil". De boeren uit de streek meden deze grond, omdat de dijkjes erom heen laag waren en er altijd kans was op een overstroming. Leendert plantte aardappels op dit land en investeerde hierin zijn gehele spaargeld. Het gewas groeide goed en een goede oogst leek gegarandeerd. Maar op een kwade dag kwam er een storm opzetten uit het noordwesten, die gepaard ging met een springvloed, waardoor de gehele Krabbepolder onder water liep en de oogst verloren ging. Hij ging samen met zijn broer Arie op 8 november 1911 aan boord te Amsterdam op het schip 'Hollandia', om in Brazilia te gaan kijken voor een nieuwe toekomst.
