Notes about Peter van Holstein-Gottrop

Peter III Fjodorovitsj (Kiel 21 februari 1728 - Sint-Petersburg 18 juli 1762) was in 1762 tsaar van Rusland
Peter III regeerde van 1761 tot 1762 hij was de grondlegger van de dynastie Romanov-Holstein-Gottorp.
De in Kiel geboren zoon van de hertog Karel Frederik van Holstein-Gottorp en Anna Petrovna (dochter van Peter de Grote) woonde vanaf 1742 in Rusland. In 1745 trouwde hij met Sophie Augusta van Anhalt-Zerbst, die hem als Catharina de Grote als tsarina opvolgde.
Hijzelf regeerde slechts zeven maanden, sloot in deze tijd vrede met Frederik de Grote waardoor Rusland uit de Zeventienjarige Oorlog terugtrad. Hij voerde bovendien enkele hervormingen door, zoals de afschaffing van foltering, de nationalisatie van kloosterbezit en een tolerantiewet.
Op 9 juli 1762 werd hij door zijn vrouw Catharina de Grote ten val gebracht en kort daarop onder niet volledig opgehelderde omstandigheden, vermoedelijk door Aleksej Orlov, gedood.
