Typische 'kleine luyden'-predikant, die in 1897 na afloop van de troonrede spontaan (als eerste) het 'Leve de Koningin' aanhief. Mocht dat als nestor van de Tweede Kamer ook de jaren daarna doen. Afkomstig uit Gelderland, maar woonachtig in Leiden en daar ook gemeenteraadslid. Twintig jaar afgevaardigde voor het district Leiden. Koos in 1894 de zijde van Kuyper bij de strijd over de kiesrechtuitbreiding. Gemoedelijke en vriendelijke man, in wiens spreken de dominee was te herkennen.
