Notes about Martinus van den BRANDELER

Dr. Martinus van den BRANDELER, geb. te Dordrecht 13 Dec. 1790, overl aldaar 18 Oct. 1869, was de zoon van Mr. Johan (2) en Alida Petronella van Nievelt. Hij promoveerde in 1814 te Leiden tot Doctor in de medicijnen en vestigde zich als geneesheer in zijn geboorteplaats, waar hij in 1837-51 lid was van den gemeenteraad. Voorts was hij curator der Latijnsche school en daarna van het Gymnasium. Hij was medeoprichter van het Letterk. Genootschap ‘Diversa Sed Una’ in 1816, en beoefende de letteren en ook de theologie. Nog op reeds ver gevorderden leeftijd studeerde hij daartoe Hebreeuwsch. Onder den schuilnaam Alethophilus en Philalethes, schreef hij in de Godgeleerde Bijdragen van 1846-50. Het gedicht van Borger, Ode aan den Rijn vertaalde hij in het Grieksch. Verder gaf hij een latijnsch gedicht op den dood van H.M. Vockestraert (1840). Hij was gehuwd met Wilhelmina Cornelia van Oldenborgh, uit welk huwelijk 8 kinderen sproten, waaronder Willem Cornelis (24 Oct. 1817-5 Mei 1880), burgemeester van Leiden.
