Notes about Diana Frances SPENCER

Diana Frances Spencer (1 juli 1961 – 31 augustus 1997) was de eerste echtgenote van de Britse kroonprins Charles en is de moeder van de Britse prinsen William en Harry.
Diana was de jongste dochter van de Hon. Frances Ruth Burke-Roche (dochter van de 4de baron Fermoy) en de Hon. Edward John Spencer, Viscount Althorp, waardoor Diana een afstammeling was van de vele koningen van Engeland. Diana had twee zusters, Sarah en Jane, en een broer, Charles.
Na de dood van haar grootvader aan vaders zijde, de zevende Graaf Spencer in 1975, werd Lord Althrop de achtste Graaf Spencer, en zijn dochter kreeg de titel 'Lady Diana Spencer'. Ze kreeg haar opleiding in Norfolk en aan een kostschool in Kent, en werd beschouwd als een gemiddelde leerlinge. Toen ze 16 jaar was ging ze naar het Institut Alpin Videmanette, in Rougemont, Zwitserland, voor het laatste jaar van haar opleiding.
In 1980, toen ze 19 jaar oud was, werd ze opgemerkt door de Prins van Wales, Prins Charles, die haar uitnodigde voor een polowedstrijd. Een romance begon, en het stel verloofde zich op 24 februari 1981. Zij trouwden op 29 juli van datzelfde jaar onder grote publieke belangstelling in de St Paul's Cathedral in Londen. Er wordt wel honend gezegd dat Charles met Diana wilde trouwen omdat zij de enige adellijke dame in Europa zou zijn die op die leeftijd nog maagd was.
Diana kreeg twee kinderen: Prins William in 1982, en Prins Harry in 1984. Aan het eind van de tachtiger jaren kreeg ze steeds meer bekendheid door haar steun voor goede doelen. Ze heeft veel betekend in campagnes tegen het gebruik van landmijnen en in het verminderen van het stigma rondom Aids. In 1995 ontving ze de Humanitarian of the Year award.
Aan het begin van de negentiger jaren liep het huwelijk op de klippen, en hoewel het koppel al in 1992 uit elkaar ging, werd de scheiding pas in 1996 afgerond.

Auto-ongeluk
Diana kwam om het leven op 31 augustus 1997 bij een auto-ongeluk in de Alma tunnel in Parijs, samen met haar vriend Dodi Al-Fayed. Alhoewel er veel samenzweringstheorieën zijn opgeworpen in de media, wordt over het algemeen aangenomen dat het een ongeluk was, veroorzaakt door een chauffeur die alcohol had gedronken en met hoge snelheid paparazzi probeerde te ontlopen.
Haar dood veroorzaakte een bijzonder publiekelijke rouwperiode en naar schatting 6 miljoen mensen waren getuige van de begrafenisplechtigheden. Diana werd begraven in Althorp in Groot-Brittannië, op een eiland in het midden van een meer op het landgoed van haar broer. Bezoekers kunnen om het meer lopen, en kunnen een tentoonstelling over Diana bekijken in een bezoekerscentrum.
Op 6 juli 2004 werd een monument voor haar geopend in Hyde Park (Londen). Het is een fontein in de vorm van een ovale ring van steen.
