Notes about Wilhelm van RUIJTENBURGH

Wilhem is misschien wel de bekendste persoon die ooit in Vlaardingen heeft gewoond. Nooit van gehoord? Toch is hij beroemd, misschien niet van naam maar van gezicht. Wilhem van Ruytenburch is de ‘man in het geel’ op het schilderij ‘Korporaalschap van kapitein Frans Banning Cocq' of kortweg de Nachtwacht van Rembrandt van Rijn. Wat deed hij in Vlaardingen?

De naam ‘Van Ruytenburch’ klinkt heel deftig, zelfs adellijk. Toch kwam Wilhem uit een tamelijk eenvoudige Amsterdamse familie. Zijn voorvaderen handelden er in kruiden en zijn vader Pieter was daar omstreeks 1600 heel rijk mee geworden. Hij woonde in een huis aan de Amsterdamse Warmoesstraat, vlakbij de Dam. Nu staat daar het Nationaal Monument. Dat huis heette al sinds de middeleeuwen ‘Rutenburch’ en de ijdele, rijke kruidenhandelaar Pieter noemde zich naar dat huis.

Heer van Vlaardingen

In 1611 kreeg Pieter Gerritsz. van Ruytenburch een prachtige kans om écht voornaam te worden. Karel, prins van Arenberg, bood op dat moment de Buitenweide en zijn rechten als ambachtsheer te koop aan. Voor 26.000 gulden werd de Amsterdamse koopman Pieter de nieuwe ambachtsheer van Vlaardingen en Vlaardinger-Ambacht.

De man in het geel

Pieter Gerritsz. van Ruytenburch stierf in 1627. Zijn zoon Wilhem volgde hem op als ambachtsheer. Net als zijn vader deed hij zich graag deftiger voor dan hij was. Zo liet hij een oude vrouw uit Brabant verklaren dat zijn familie uit die streek kwam en van adel was. Van adel of ijdel, Wilhem had wel succes. Hij kwam vaak aan het hof in den Haag en was actief in de Amsterdamse politiek, waar hij schepen (wethouder) werd. Maar hij verbleef steeds vaker in Vlaardingen, waar hij in 1627 een prachtig huis had laten bouwen op zijn buitenplaats ‘Het Hof’. In 1652 is hij gestorven. Zijn verwanten bleven tot 1830 ambachtsheer van Vlaardingen.
