Notes about Bernard Hendrik Arkes

In 1853 geemigreerd naar USA Missouri, St Louis County.Bernard Henry WAS Dutch, born in Twist, Germany which is directly on the Dutch border. He grew up in Slagharen, Netherlands. His father was Fredericus Arkes born 1785-1882 in Overjissel, Netherlands; and mother was Anna Maria Heet born 1793-1878 in Emsland Germany. My DNA confirmed that I am a descendant of Anna Maria Heet. There is no doubt this is Bernard Henry's family line from Germany/Netherlands.
He immigrated in 1853. His port of departure was Bremerhaven, Germany. He may have been the only one in his immediate family that left Europe. The ship was called 'New England'. It arrived in New Orleans. The family story is that on the final stage up the Mississippi, he had to leave the steamboat due to an outbreak of cholera. He earned his keep and train fare to St. Louis by splitting fence rails at 90 cents a hundred.
He hired out as a farmhand in Florissant and married the farmer's daughter, Mary Keeven. As a wedding gift they were given 25 acres of land and Henry built a log home with walnut trees from this land. He enlisted as a Union soldier and fought in the Civil War. In 1865 he started having his children. His family grew up in his log home, as well as his son Fred's family.
