Notes about Gerhardus Johannes Bernardus "Gait" Arkes

Verhaal verteld door Jeanne op 20-09-2011.
Voor de oorlog werkte vader bij banketbakkerij Ter Beek aan de Grotestraat zuid, waar Bolletje nu is. Later is hij gaan werken bij Koendering als bakker en bezorger. Met de bakfiets ging hij door weer en wind om brood in de stad en het platteland t e bezorgen. Hij ging, als hij thuis kwam, onder de kachel liggen om weer warm te worden. Tijdens de oorlog was er geen werk meer. Gait werd opgeroepen om te gaan werken in Duitsland. Gait had net al zijn tanden laten trekken en om die reden werd hij bij de keuring in de gevangenis aan de Marktstraat afgekeurd en hij hoefde niet naar het concentratiekamp in Duitsland.
Na de bevrijding werkte Gait bij de grenswacht in de catering. Het gezin kwam aan eten door zelfgemaakte kousen te ruilen voor rogge. De kousen werden door oom Jan op een breimachine gemaakt en door opoe zwart geverfd.
Nelly Klippel was een meisje die, na de bevrijding, door Gait uit medelijden werd meegenomen vanaf de grens naar Almelo. Nelly was zo'n meisje dat een relatie had met een Duitser of sympatiseerde met de NSB. Zij kwam terug naar Nederland en was bang voor represailles. Nelly heeft een paar weken bij het gezin in gewoond. Zij sliep bij Jeanne in bed. Adri van klinken, met wie Nelly een zoon had (van de leeftijd van Fred), heeft haar later opgehaald en meegenomen naar Zeeland. Nelly wist niet of zi j nog wel welkom was bij haar familie. Later zijn Gait en Riek nog in Zeeland op bezoek geweest.
Ook heeft Gait aan een Joods meisje een paar dagen onderdak geboden in de Primulastraat. Haar ouders waren er niet meer, misschien waren zij al door de Duitsers meegenomen. Omdat in de buurt veel NSB'ers woonden was de kans op verraad groot en mocht zij niet langer blijven maar moest zich melden bij de autoriteiten. Die van Bauk waren NSB'ers en ook oom Mart van Os die getrouwd was met Tante Annie Hergers, een zus van oma Riek Arkes-Hergers. Na de oorlog is van Os opgepakt en zijn straf in een N SB strafkamp bij Ommen uitgezeten. Tante Annie had al drie kinderen en tijdens het bezoek aan het strafkamp is uit de gemeenschap een vierde kind geboren (Martie). Mart heeft ook goede dingen gedaan als NSB 'er. Hij kwam hij bij de familie binnen in zijn zwarte pak om eten (b.v. vet), wat hij achterover had gedrukt, uit te delen.
