ction">abelLargeBold ProfileBorderBottom">Notities 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18px;">ox; vertical-align: inherit;">Thomas was een Engelse edelman en een raadslid van zijn halfbroer Richard II. Toen zijn vader in 1360 stierf, werd Thomas Baron Holand. Zijn moeder was nog steeds gravin van Kent. Op zestienjarige leeftijd, in 1366, werd Holland aangesteld als kapitein van de Engelse troepen in Aquitaine. Hij vochten in verschillende campagnes in de volgende jaren, en werd een Knight of the Garter in 1375 - De meest nobele orde van de Kousenband is een ridderorde, of ridderorde, afkomstig uit het Middeleeuwse Engeland. De Orde is opgedragen aan het beeld en de wapens van St. George als de patroonheilige van Engeland. Het lidmaatschap van de orde is beperkt tot de soeverein, de Prins van Wales, en niet meer dan vierentwintig leden of metgezellen. Richard II werd koning in 1377, en al snel kreeg Nederland grote invloed op zijn jongere halfbroer, die hij gebruikte voor zijn eigen verrijking. In 1381 werd hij graaf van Kent gemaakt. Door de huwelijken van zijn dochters werd hij de voorvader van veel van de prominente figuren in de oorlogen van de rozen, waaronder Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Hertog van York en Warwick the Kingmaker.
