In 1506 erft hij van zijn vader de Nederlandse territoria onder voogdij van grootvader Maximiliaan. In 1516 koning v Spanje. In 1519 keizer v H.Roomse Rijk. Moest keurvorsten dik betalen om gekozen te kunnen worden. In 1530 in Bologna tot keizer gekroond. Troonsafstand in 1556 tgv zoon Filips (Nederlanden, Spanje, Zuid Amerika) enbroer Ferdinand (H. Roomse Rijk). Begraven in het Escorial.
