Notes about Leendert KEESMAAT

Leendert Keesmaat is de oudste zoon van een gereformeerd gezin in Dordrecht. Zijn vader is ouderling in de Wilhelminakerk. Als onderwijzer verhuist Keesmaat naar Rotterdam en sluit zich aan bij de Geuzengroep. Na zijn arrestatie in november 1940 tot zijn dood zit Keesmaat vast in het huis van bewaring van Scheveningen, ook bekend als het Oranjehotel. Tegelijkertijd worden ook zijn broers Arie en Wim gearresteerd. Leendert en Wim Keesmaat slaan ondanks de mishandelingen tijdens hun verhoren niet door en worden uiteindelijk tijdens het Geuzenproces veroordeeld tot drie respectievelijk twee keer de doodstraf.

Keesmaat is een van de achttien in het gedicht Het lied der achttien doden van Jan Campert. Leendert Keesmaat wordt op 13 maart 1941 op de Waalsdorpervlakte gefusilleerd, de straf van de nog minderjarige Wim Keesmaat wordt omgezet in levenslang. Tijdens zijn gevangenschap houdt Leendert een dagboek bij, dat hij op closetpapier schrijft. Een medegevangene draagt dit dagboek over aan de familie. Hij is in 1945 herbegraven op de Essenhof in Dordrecht.
