Deze tak van de familie van Bentem heeft zich ongeveer 900 jaar geleden in de provincie Utrecht gevestigd en zijn waarschijnlijk afstammelingen van de Graaf van Bentheim afkomstig uit het Duistse plaatsje Bad Bentheim, kasteel Bentheim.De Familie Bentheim (Benthem) behoord tot de Friese adel. Dit Duitse plaatsje ligt ongeveer 20 km zuidelijk van Nordhorn en is bekend geworden in Nederland van wege het Bentheimer-zandsteen dat daar gewonnen werd. In Nederland is van deze steensoort o.a. het Paleis op de Dam gebouwd.
