De opvoeding van de twee jongsten kwam dus helemaal neer op de schouders van moeder Maria.

De achternaam van zoon Thomas wordt dan in 1951 officieel gewijzigd in Bronner. Thomas en Marchien laten zich in 1957 scheiden en ze hertrouwen dan weer in 1959, nu echter op huwelijkse voorwaarden. Als Thomas in 1969 overlijdt zijn de enige erfgenamen zijn tweede echtgenote en zijn jongste zoon Thomas.
