De Amsterdamse schilder en graficus Theo Beerendonk (1905–1979) was een kunstenaar die zijn roots had in de klassieke kunst en daarvan nooit afstand zou doen. Portretten, naakten, stillevens en landschappen, hij beheerste alle klassieke genres. Evengoed raakte hij in de jaren vijftig onder de indruk van de moderne kunst. Gretig en met zijn gevoel voor compositie en kleur, begon Beerendonk zijn figuren te stileren en abstraheren.
Vooral in zijn grafiek ontwikkelde hij een heel eigenzinnige beeldtaal. Hij experimenteerde met de techniek van de monodruk. De resultaten daarvan, getoond op een solo-expositie bij de Utrechtse Kring in 1960, baarden opzien en nog altijd spreken ze velen aan door hun rijkdom aan kleur. In de jaren zeventig legde hij penselen en burijn regelmatig weg om meters hoge metalen beelden te lassen. Maar altijd weer pakte hij ook houtskool of krijt om een klassiek portret te schetsen. Beerendonk was een kunstenaar die thuis was in de klassieke én in de moderne kunst.
