Note:
George II succeeded to the British throne and the electorate of Hanov er on the death of his father, George I, in 1727. Born on Nov. 10, 168 3, in Hanover, he remained largely Hanoverian in his interests, although,u nlike his father, he learned fluent English. He visited the electorate reg ularly during most of his reign and sometimes utilized his position aski ng of England to the advantage of his German territory.

Although George has been represented as a king manipulated by his own mini sters--notably Sir Robert Walpole and the duke of Newcastle--and byhis hig hly intelligent wife, Queen Caroline (1683-1737), he was by no means a we ak monarch. He played a larger part in the direction of foreign and milita ry policy than most contemporaries suspected, and at Dettingen (1743 ), in the War of the Austrian Succession, was the last British monar ch to appear in person on the battlefield. His reign witnessed the final c ollapse of the Jacobites after their uprising of 1745 and closed with Brit ain's brilliant successes in the Seven Years' War (1756-63) under the lead ership of William Pitt the Elder. George had long detested Pitt, but he ev entually came to recognize his merits.

George's son, Frederick, predeceased him, so when George II died on Oct.2 5, 1760, he was succeeded by Frederick's son, George III. Although he w as vulnerable to management by others, George II was undoubtedly aknowledg eable and skillful politician, within the narrow framework of Hanoverian i nterests in which he worked.

Profession : Electeur de Hanovre (1727-1760) - Georges III Auguste,
Roi de Grande-Bretagne (1727-1760) - Angleterre, Roi d'Irlande (1727-1760).

==============================

     George II (reigned 1727-60), at the age of 60, was the last British
sovereign to fight alongside his soldiers, at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743 in Germany, against the French. Like his father, for much of his reign George's political options were limited by the strength of the Jacobite cause (James Stuart the Old Pretender, and then his son, Charles Edward Stuart), with which many of the Tories were linked. George's reign was threatened in 1745 when Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, landed in Scotland. After some initial success (which led to the popularity of the national anthem in its current form becoming popular among the Hanoverian loyalists), Charles was defeated at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746 and the
Jacobite threat was over. The foundations of the industrial revolution were
laid during George's reign, with new levels of production in industries such as coal and shipbuilding and also in agriculture, together with a rapid rise in population. Overseas, trade was boosted by successes such as Clive's victories in India at Arcot (1751) and Plassey (1757) which placed Madras and Bengal under British control, and Wolfe's capture of French-held Quebec in 1759 (part of a successful campaign which transferred Canada with its wealthy trade in fish and fur from Bourbon to British rule). As the country prospered and George's reign lengthened, George's early unpopularity (he did not travel far in England, and much preferred Hanover) changed into a general respect. The king's eldest son, Frederick, died in 1751. George's grandson therefore inherited the throne, on George's death in 1760.
He is the last monarch to be buried at Westminster Abbey.
