Notes about William Ruthven 1st Earl of Gowrie

     William was the principal actor in the Raid of Ruthven which took
James VI out of the power of Lennox and Arran. Although the King pardoned the actors, the Convention of Estates reversed the pardon. After Ruthven engaged in a new scheme to seize Stirling Castle, he was tried and beheaded at Stirling on May 4, 1584 and his property forfeited.
