Sir Edward Montagu, Knight (K.B.), was elevated to the peerage, 29 June, 1 621,
as 1st Baron Montagu, of Boughton, co. Northampton.
Note:
This nobleman is characterised "as a person of plain, downright English sp irit;
of a steady courage, a devout heart; and though no puritan, severe and reg ular
in his life and manners. That he lived amongst his neighbours with great
hospitality; and was very knowing in country affairs, and exceedingly belo ved
in the town and county of Northampton. That he was no friend to changes ei ther
in church or state; that when the civil wars began, he was brought prison er to
town by the parliament party, and confined in the Savoy; where he di ed in the
82nd year of his age, 1644".

High Sheriff of Northants, 1595-96, and 1600-01... ; was K.B. at the
Coronation, 23 July 1603, of James I. He was cr., 29 Jun 1621, Baron Monta gu
of Boughton... . Lord Lieut. of Northants, 1642, exerting himself, thou gh of
great age, on behalf of the King, and being consequenty seized by the
Parliamentary party in Sep. of that year. (d) ... When summoned to attend
the King at Yorkk in Mar. 1639, he wrote to Secretary Coke, 18 Feb. 1638/9 :
"though I am 76 years of age, and have some great infirmities upon me, y et I
will rather venture my life than deny to serve his Majesty".
He died while a prisoner ( on account of his loyalty to the King ).
