Maria, Tochter Herzog Heinrichs I. von Brabant , wurde 1214 2. Gemahlin Kaiser OTTOS IV., nachdem seine 1. Gemahlin Beatrix, eine Tochter PHILIPPS von Schwaben und der Irene von Byzanz, kurz nach der Hochzeit gestorben war. Nach dem Tode OTTOS IV. heiratete Maria 1220 den Grafen Wilhelm von Holland; sie wurde jedoch 1222 bereits wieder Witwe. Sowohl als Gräfin von Holland wie in ihrer Witwenzeit, in der sie den Kaisertitel wieder annahm und sich allgemein quondam imperatrix nannte, führte sie jeweils ein Reitersiegel.

Herzog Heinrich I.  unterstützte seinen Schwiegersohn OTTO, der bei Bouvines geschlagen worden war und gebrochen und hilflos nach Köln kam. Hier machte OTTOS zügellose Gemahlin, eben die brabantische Maria, so große Spielschulden, dass OTTO unter dem Vorwand, er gehe auf die Jagd, aus der Stadt ritt und seine in Köln verhaßt gewordene Gemahlin ihm heimlich in Pilgertracht nach Braunschweig folgte. Diese brabantische Maria mag den letzten Lebensjahren des gebrochenen und verzweifelten WELFENOTTO IV. wenig Glück gebracht haben.
