Hij was het 3e kind van zijn vader. Hertog van Kleef (1448-1481). Het graafschap Marck viel hem ten deel na de dood van zijn oom Gerard van Kleef in 1461; door zijn huwelijk kwamen de graafschappen Nevers, Rethel en Eu in een jongere tak van het huis van der Marck. Ridder in de Orde van het Gulden Vlies (1451). Bij zijn overlijden liet hij 6 wettige en verscheidene natuurlijke kinderen na.
