May have enlisted in the Kentucky Cavalry at age 13. Involved in several
court actions. Charged with Horse Stealing in 1870, case dismissed.
Charged again in 1873, disposition unknown.
At age 13 joined A Company, 40th Kentucky Infantry ( Union ), called
Mounted Infantry.
Accused of stealing a saddle, and of planning to steal a horse. Accused in
1870 of horse theft; dismissed. Two court cases missing, then in 1873
another one for horse stealing. Not on 1880 census of Fleming County.
His first lady ( McDonald ) married another while he served 2 stints in
State Prison in 1870's for horse stealing.
Called himself Charles E. Hayden by 1887, trade a mechanic.
