Notes about Elizabeth Snyder

[Hardin Clay Roots.ged]
[Melissa Thompson Alexander.ged]

Overwhelmingly, most Scheider/Snider/Snyders are of German speaking origin.  There of course was no "Germany" until the various duchys, principalities and kingdoms were unified ca 1865.

Scneider means tailor, as most of you undoubtedly know.  Some of our ancestors changed their name to Taylor.

One does have to be careful with all such ancestors, because those descending from Germans have often been anxious to repress or deny it, thus sometimes in quite good faith, people will say they were Dutch or French Huguenots, or Swiss, because that was what they were told when young.

Dutch is particularly suspect, since we speak of the Pennsylvania Dutch and some think such people were indeed Dutch instead of speakers of Deutsch, from whence they got their name.  To muddy the waters still further, we did of course have early Colonial Dutch settlers here, but to my knowledge Schneider is not a Dutch name.

There are, however, Snyders who came here from Switzerland.
