John Mewes OF VIRGINIA

Who was John Muse/Mewes?  This question has been pursued by many but only  some sought the answers and then made this material public knowledge.
PUBLISHED AND UNPUBLISHED RESOURCES
In the early 1930's Walter Lee Hopkins sought the answers on his family surname "Hopkins "  and their related families and because the Muse surname was related he sought out those answers as well.  In 1931 he published his facts and findings on Muse's of Virginia and their descendants along with his descendants in book called " Hopkins of Virginia and Related Families".  Published in 1931. ; This is one of the first recorded and published references I have found and it has with stood the test of time.
In the 1940s Mary Hope West and Juliet Fauntleroy pursued this question and then compiled an unpublished manuscript that now resides in the archives of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington DC.  In 1945 they published a summation of their findings the "Virginia Magazine of History and Biography".  In three different issues from April 1945 to October 1945 they published a descending tree of the ancestors of John Muse Sr.  Where "Hopkins of Virginia and Related Families" only dealt with a certain line of descendants of John Sr. West and Fauntleroy expanded on this to include all they could find.  The works of Walter Hopkins and West and Fauntleroy have with stood the scrutiny of time and the information they have provided has been paramount to our research.
In 1994 and 1997 Dr. Roger David Chambers in collaboration with Lou Andrews Murphy and Robert T. Muse researched and compiled information on John Sr. and his descendants in an unpublished manuscript called "A Southern Legacy: Descendants of John Muse of Virginia I & II"  In these manuscript they took the works of the first two and conducted more research on their findings and then researched later generations and added  them as well.  How ever this research focused mainly on North Carolina, Tennessee and  their migration west.  Like the other two references they provided research they collected from others or conducted them self to include references and finding of facts.  The contents of this research however only touched on the Muse's of Kentucky that lived in around the Pulaski County Kentucky in the early 1800's and 1900's, it never went into any great depth or detail on the subject.  All of these works have stood the test of time and are used by many researchers like us in trying to answer who was John Muse Sr. and where do we fit in?   I am not going to try and express word for word what the above references have said, but will try to sum up their findings and facts where it is most important or necessary.  We have listed these same resources and others under Richard Sr. as well.

MUSE'S OF KENTUCKY
Who where the Muse's of the Pulaski County area of Kentucky?  What was their relationship to John Muse Sr.? ; Where did the Muse surname come from?  The above references state that the Mewes surname originated from early England or France and once these descendants settled in the Colonies the name slowly transformed to the spelling most commonly used today, Muse.  During our research we also found in the early 1800's to 1900's a family of Meaux's living in Mercer County Kentucky and it was apparent based on the census record studies we did of Kentucky and Missouri that some these Meaux's transformed the spelling of their surname to Muse.  Like most families they originated from Virginia in the late 1700's.  We found no evidence to suggest that these Meaux's (French pronunciation "Me O") have any connections with John Sr. and his descendants in Kentucky.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN OF John SR.
Many attempts have been made to connect John Sr. to the shores of England but today this has not been successful. ; The closest that anyone has gotten was research done by a genealogical research firm that identified a John Mewes who

Notes from HOPKINS OF VIRGINIA:

At the time this book was written, there was no evidence of the date of arrival of this family in Virginia, nor of their point of origin in England.  "In the Isle of Wight, England, the family is found as far back as the 15th century.  In Kingston Church, built in the 13th century, is a small brass inscribed:  'Mr. Richard Meweys
whych deceassyd the iii day of March in the yere of our Lord God MCCCCC and XXXV.'  He is represented as wearing a long gown liberally trimmed with fur.  A small plate on one side of the figure is engraved with four sons similarly clad, and on the other side is a shield of the Mewes arms--Paly of 6 on a chief 3 crosses pattee."  The author was certain that the name is originated in France.  "On the other hand, Thomas Muse, Jr., of Westmoreland Co., Virginia, who wrote the will of Elizabeth Muse, widow, in 1734, spells the word daughter as if pronounced 'dafter,' which, it is said, is a north of England colloquialism."

Earliest records of the Muse family in Virginia:  On Sept. 1, 1666 (D. & W. B. I, p. 316, West'd Co.)  Robert Muse was a witness to a deed from Thomas Wilsford to his son Andrew Wilsford, and on July 4, 1683, George Jones deeded George Mewes 680 and John Muse 180 acres. (Records of Old Rappa Co. Vol. 1680-1688).  In 1707 Michael Mewes is named in the will of John Elliott of Westmoreland Co.  On Mar. 26 (D. & W. B. 5, p. 415, West'd Co.), Nicholas Mewes of West'd Co., deeds Brooks Allington (or Abbington) of same Co., 50 acres of land, which he, Nicholas Mewes purchased from Brooks Allington on Feb. 1, 1708.  On Dec. 7, 1720 (D. & W. B. 7, p. 538, Richmond Co., Va.), Catherine Mews gives bond as Admx. of the estate of Ann Lewis, dec'd.

On June 7, 1703, John Muse, Sr., assigned his son, John Muse, Jr., a patent to 360 acres of land lying partly in Richmond and Westmoreland Counties, upon which he, John Muse, Sr., entered and had surveyed Mar. 31, 1692. (Northern Neck Grant Book No. 3, p. 2).

On Oct. 30, 1707, Thomas Muse, of West'd Co., and John Muse, Jr., of Richmond Co., Va., were granted 265 acres in West'd Co.  On Nov. 10, 1711, Nicholas Muse of West'd Co., received a grant of land of 179 acres in West'd Co. on Holling Branch on Great Rappahannock Creek, between the counties of Richmond and West'd.
(Northern Neck Grant Book No. 4, p. 60).

"Later records prove conclusively that John Muse, Jr., and Thomas Muse, Sr., were brothers, and sons of John Muse, Sr., who was born in 1633 and died in 1723 at the age of 90 years.  On the 7th of September, 1715, Edward Barrow, Nicho A. Smith, John Tayloe and James Ingo, were ordered to take the depositions of John Mews and William Carter, which they did, and on Oct. 5, 1715, presented them in Court. In the deposition of John Muse, Sr., he stated that he was then Eight-two years of age.
(Miscellaneous Records and Depositions, p. 93, Richmond Co., Va.).

"Robert, George and Michael Muse may have been brothers of John Muse, Sr., but from the records it appears that the latter was the only one who left male issue."

WILL OF John MUSE, SR., dated April 5, 1723, prob. Oct 8, 1723, as follows, omitting the preamble:
"My last will and testament is that all debts and funeral expenses be fully paid and discharged.  My will is to give to Thomas Muse my son one shilling my daughter Jane Pritchett one shilling my daughter Ann Willson one shilling my daughter Mary Quisenberry one shilling and all the rest I give to my daughter-in-law Ann Muse, as Witness my hand this 5 day of April 1723--John Muse mar. (Seal) Robert Sanford, George Dunbar, Westmoreland. ss I.
At a court held for the said County the 25th day of September 1723--The last will and testament of John Muse deceased was presented into Court by Ann Muse his daughter-in-law who made oath thereto and being proved by the oath of Robert Sanford one of the witnesses thereto is admitted to record.  And for that no Exr. is ordained in the sid will upon mocon of the said Ann (as greatest creditor) and her performing what is usual in such case certificate is granted her for obtaining lettere of admicon on the said decedts. estaet with the will annexed in due form--

INVENTORY OF ESTATE, John Muse, 26 Nov 1723, recorded 4 Dec 1723, presented by Ann Muse, Westmoreland Co., VA, Records & Inventories, 1723-1746.  The estate was appraised by Humphey Pope, Thomas King, and Matthew Boan.

(From Greg Howearth relative to the will of John Muse: ; WILL: VA Westmoreland Co. Will Book, GHL 975.524W761 Mesa?   "Evidently moved to Westmoreland Co VA after the death of second wife and lived with John, Jr. and Ann, which is probably the reason Ann got the whole of his estate.")

From Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Volume 1, Richmond County Records 1692-1704: p. 280:  p. 20-A Misc. Records:
John Muse is listed as owed $62 in probate papers of Wm. Brockenbrough, Dec.  On p. 303 John Muse is listed as paid the $62. p. 302:  p. 73-A Misc. Records:  Both John Muse and John Muse, Jr., are listed as signers of a report of land survey.

From letter from Bob Muse dated 10 Dec. 1997:
John Muse Sr.'s will was written 5 April 1723, probated 25 September 1723, and recorded 8 October 1723.  ; Thusly, he probably died September of 1723.

"A Southern Legacy" lists a number of documents naming John Muse, RDC11.

That John Muse was born in 1633 is documented by:  5 Oct 1715, "Deposition of John Mews & William Lewis" referencing "John Mewes Aged Eighty two years.  (From "Southern Legacy")
Christy Flynn lists date of death as 8 Oct 1723.
Jeanne Muse and Rev. McLeod agree on 5 April 1723.  See note on will. Bob Muse surmises that based on the date of will, he probably died in September of 1723.
