Gilbert de Mitford had a release 19 Edward III from John de Bolam, of all right to two tenements in Bolam (Ex. inf. Joh. dom. de Redesdale.)
Gilbert was the real founder of the Mitford family, and the genealogy previous to him is entirely spurious.  Gilbert made his fortune on the Tyne in the 14th century and his son John bought lands at Mitford. Their name was no doubt assumed from Mitford because this was their late place of residence, perhaps as small freemen, before migrating to Newcastle.  To John were granted in 1369 the lands and tenements of Molesdon, a small area adjacent to the village of Mitford, whence the three little moles figuring on their family crest.
