William Bertram obtained a grant from the crown in the 5th year of King John [1204], of the manor of Felton, in Northumberland, with all the woods thereunto belonging.  He m. Alice, dau. of Robert de Umfraville, and d. in or before the 7th year of the same reign [1206], for at that time we find King John conferring the wardship of his lordship's son and heir, Roger, upon Peter de Brus, with the custody of his lands during the minority, in consideration of the sum of 300 marks.  To the possession of which lands succeeded, when at full age, the said Roger Bertram.
